Regardless of your definition of ‘resource’, water can be said to be one of the most valuable, essential, and precious resources we have. It’s used in everything from powering your home to keeping you alive at a very basic level. Every single cell in your body needs water to function correctly – without it, you would quite literally collapse into a heap of organic dust! Granting that water is worth protecting and preserving, it also helps to know where most of it goes when it is consumed. So, who among us uses the most water in the US, and for what reasons?

When we use the word ‘who’, we’re referring to entire industries. We’re not talking about your neighbors who might leave their water sprinkler on for too long or even your entire town’s water consumption level. We’re talking about whole industries. What basic features of day-to-day life in the United States require the most water to sustain?

Consider these facts relating to agriculture and farming:

A single dollar’s worth of table sugar requires roughly 270 gallons of water to produce.
A dollar’s worth of pet food (dog kibble, for example) requires 200 gallons of water.
Want to buy $1 worth of milk? That relatively small amount of fluid costs a whopping 140 gallons of water to produce.

Even giving these statistics a passing thought is enough to make us reconsider our shopping list. The absolutely biggest consumers of water in the US are the combined industries of agriculture and power generation. Put simply, food and power. Between these two massive industrial behemoths, 90 percent of water is consumed. Does that mean we should stop eating and using power? Of course not. It does mean that we should be conscious about our purchase decisions, and we should be responsible, informed consumers.
