What Are the Risks of Consuming Untreated Water?

It can be easy to take for granted the water that we are used to getting straight from the ‘tap’ – water for cooking, bathing, giving to pets and, of course, drinking. Municipal water treatment facilities are, for the most part, very efficient when it comes to treating water before it is sent through distribution pipes that terminate in your home or business. However, even the most state-of-the-art water treatment facility cannot guarantee a completely pathogen-free water source, mostly because no method of water treatment is 100% successful at removing harmful organisms from the water.

In this week’s blog post, we’re going to have a look at what the real risks are when consuming water that hasn’t been correctly treated. According to the Water Quality Association, here is a partial list of potential water contaminants:

  1. Aluminum
  2. Ammonia
  3. Arsenic
  4. Barium
  5. Cadmium
  6. Chloramine
  7. Chromium
  8. Copper
  9. Fluoride
  10. Bacteria & Viruses
  11. Lead
  12. Nitrates/Nitrites
  13. Mercury
  14. Perchlorate
  15. Radium
  16. Selenium
  17. Silver
  18. Uranium

So what happens if and when these harmful substances are consumed? Acute effects of intoxication of the above substances are for the most part very rare, and only occur when a spill has seeped into the water supply. However, prolonged exposure to these substances can have a cumulative effect over time, resulting in adverse health effects that don’t surface until sometimes years after the first exposure. Heavy metal intoxication can result in reproductive issues, development of certain types of cancers, and, in some cases, even death.
