Clean water is vital for life. We need it for everything from drinking to cleaning. Without clean water, it would be difficult for us to maintain our own health.

Availability of Clean Water

Most of us are lucky enough to have access to relatively clean water. However, in many cases water that is considered safe or suitable for drinking by officials where we live, isn’t really up to the standard that most of us would expect it to be for use in our homes and on and in our bodies.

This is why filtration is essential in controlling chemicals that might still get into our water and our homes.  If you want to ensure that you and your family are receiving the best quality water available then you may want to consider options for removing chemicals from your water.

So What Is in Your Home Water?

In many places the tap water is safe. However, that doesn’t mean that you aren’t still consuming impurities. Depending on where you live, you could be taking in chemicals, debris, and bacteria through your water. Here are just a few things you might find in your city water:

  1. Chlorine – This is added to help make it safer. The toxicity of it can kill both microbes and bacteria that can make you sick. Chlorine is needed to help prevent the spread of different illnesses through our drinking water. However, research has shown that too much chlorine can cause a higher risk of birth defects. So even though we need chlorine in our water, we still need to filter it out before we drink it.
  2. Fluoride – This is added in many cities as a public health feature. However, not all people need the extra fluoride. Even though it won’t harm you, why have it if you don’t need it?
  3. Lead – This is yet another contaminant that can find its way into your water. Cost-saving measures, disregard for public health, and old pipes can all lead to high lead levels that are over the legal limit. We learned a hard lesson from the city of Flint in Michigan about lead contamination. It’s incredibly important that the lead is removed.
  4. Nitrate – This forms naturally when oxygen is combined with nitrogen. We all need nitrate, but when it reaches very high levels, it can be dangerous, especially for children and pregnant women. Fertilizers, septic systems, industrial waste, and poor construction of wells can all cause high levels of nitrate. If you have a well and live in a rural area you really should have your water tested once a year.
  5. Viruses – Viruses can carry diseases such as norovirus, rotavirus, and Hepatitis A. All of these can be transmitted through your water and come from human or animal waste. Most cases are found in rural areas and not city locations. Filtration systems will help to provide an extra layer of protection against viruses.

Other Types of Contamination

Here is a short list of other types of contamination you can find in water that is not well treated:

  • Arsenic
  • Copper
  • E Coli
  • Enterovirus
  • Radon
  • Salmonella
  • Shigella

Whether you know it or not, your water could have a variety of possibly harmful chemicals and organisms in it. A water filtration business can test your water for free and help you learn how you can clean up your water.
