Can you believe it? It’s almost time to start thinking about Spring!

With the warmer months just around the corner, we thought it would be timely to put together a short home efficiency checklist.

This checklist is a starting point, and it includes some high-level areas of your home that warrant an annual inspection just to ensure that you’re not wasting energy and that your home is ready for the weather changes coming our way.

Let’s get started!

#1: Check the Condition of Your Water-Using Appliances

A common myth about dishwashers, clothes washers, and hot water heaters is that if they’re not malfunctioning, there’s nothing wrong with them.

The reality is that water-using appliances can develop accumulation of water-borne sediment, like limescale. These deposits can significantly reduce the efficiency of these appliances.

Look for scaly, white formations anywhere you have couplers or water line joins throughout your home. An easy fix for water-using appliance issues is to install a water conditioning system.

#2: Check Your Attic Air

It’s not often that we think about the air in the attic. However, stagnant attic air can be the culprit for a host of home efficiency issues.

If your roof forms ice dams in cooler weather, or if mold and mildew in the attic is a problem, consider installing a solar-powered attic fan.

When attic air is better-circulated, your HVAC system doesn’t have to work as hard to do its job. And, pockets of cool or warm air don’t develop as easily in the attic, which allows your roof and rain management system to function more optimally.

#3: Evaluate Your Pool

Springtime is the perfect time to take a fresh look at your pool. Are you using it as often as you’d like to throughout the year? If you have a pool heating system, is it as efficient as it could be?
