Traditional vs. Modern Pool Heating Methods

At The LeverEdge, we work with customers who want cleaner, better water for all purposes – drinking, cleaning, cooking, and even swimming. For pool owners, there have historically been at least three methods of pool heating available:

  • Solar thermal heating
  • Electric (also called a heat pump)
  • Gas-fueled solar pool heaters

Of these three methods of pool heating, electric and gas are considered ‘traditional’. They are the older, more commonly used methods of pool heating, but they may not necessarily be the most efficient or environmentally friendly. So, which one is best for you?

First of all, it’s important to understand that electric and gas pumps use more energy resources than solar thermal, so the cost of running a gas or electric pool heating system is going to be higher. However, a solar pool heating system still has a pump, so it’s going to still require at least some electricity to operate. But, because the majority of the energy needed to heat the actual water is provided by the sun, the overall costs are lowered.

Gas heaters consume natural gas which is fairly costly in comparison with grid-sourced electricity. The cost to run a gas-powered pool heating system can be anywhere between $150-$500 a month, especially in the colder months. Electric heat pumps can be lower in cost to operate, but the heating elements in them can go bad and require replacement, which is an additional cost. To determine the best option for you, it’s best to involve a professional who can evaluate your needs, including the volume of your pool, the available area on your roof and the amount of electricity or gas you are currently consuming. This is done for cost comparison reasons.
Solar thermal pool heating systems are ideal for places like Florida, where the cooler months aren’t necessarily frigid, and not much heat is needed to maintain a comfortable pool temperature.
