The most common reason people cite for wanting to drink filtered water is the taste. Second to that, the other most common reason people cite for wanting to drink filtered water is to avoid dangerous pathogens and organisms that may cause sickness or disease. There is good reason for this latter concern, as the NRDC (National Resources Defence Council, an extension of the EPA) has reminded us of the following fact (taken from this source):

“…due to a combination of pollution and deteriorating equipment and pipes, the public water supplies in 19 of America’s largest cities deliver drinking water that contains contaminant levels exceeding EPA limits (either legal limits or unenforceable suggested limits) and may pose health risks to some residents. So even though it may test fine at its source, public water may still pick up contaminants on the way to your house.”

This should give anyone pause for concern. Among the list of potentially harmful organisms that could find their way into your drinking water, here are just a few:

  • Giardia and Cryptosporidium: During the past 2 decades, Giardia infection has become recognized as one of the most common causes of waterborne disease (found in both drinking and recreational water) in humans in North America.

  • Dysentery: An estimated 18,000 cases of shigellosis (Dysentery) occur annually in the United States. Infants, the elderly, and the infirm are susceptible to the severest symptoms of disease, but all humans are susceptible to some degree.
  • Salmonella: People most at risk from a Salmonella infection include infants, young children, the elderly and the immune-compromised.
  • Escherichia coli 0157:H7 (also known as E. Coli): E. coli O157:H7 may be found in water sources that have been contaminated with feces from infected humans or animals. Waste can enter the water through various ways, including sewage overflows, polluted storm water runoff, and agricultural runoff.

  • Many, many others!
