Solar attic fans work to keep air circulating throughout the warmer, less used parts of the home. Generally speaking, the idea is that by keeping warmer air from pooling in the attic, the entire home is made more energy efficient. What’s more, because many attic fans are solar powered, there is no ongoing cost to run them. If these reasons are not enough for you to consider a solar attic fan solution for your home, consider these lesser-known benefits of using solar attic fans:

  1. Attic ventilation prolongs the life of your roof. The foundational part of your roof – also called the ‘underlayment’ – is composed of materials that can break down over time. This happens more rapidly in higher heat environments, which is why adequate ventilation can help to increase the lifetime of your roof.
  2. Moisture buildup is reduced. When air is properly circulating in any area, it helps to maintain a healthy moisture level. This is done for the purposes of controlling mold, of course, but also as a health measure. Having humidity-controlled air means lower incidences of airborne bacteria making its way into your home.
  3. Attic vents reduce ice damming. In an uncontrolled air environment, ‘hot spots’ can develop. These are areas where temperature differences are too extreme, resulting in ice and snow melting patterns that can cause damage to gutters and shingling. Even though Florida doesn’t see much in the way of freezing temperatures, attic fans help keep ice damming from being a problem when colder weather does hit.

In addition to these three less-known benefits of attic fans, there is an even more obvious reason to use them: the requirements placed on an HVAC system are dramatically reduced. This is probably the biggest reason our customers investigate the use of solar-powered attic fans in particular. Because attic fans can reduce the temperature of attic air by as much as 40 degrees Fahrenheit, the overall load placed on the HVAC unit responsible for cooling the building is reduced. This translates into less money spent on electricity bills.
