Did you know that using ultraviolet (UV) light to sterilize water has been a practice used to provide clean drinking water for Europeans for over 90 years? Here in the US, even though the technology has been broadly adopted, it is still marginally used in comparison with other parts of the world. One reason for this could be because consumers simply aren’t educated on the features and benefits of a UV water sterilization system. That’s why The LeverEdge is devoting this week’s blog post to three key facts about water UV sterilization.

Fact #1: Most municipal water providers do not provide point-of-use water sterilization. In fact, the most commonly used method of controlling water-borne pathogens is the addition of chlorine to the water supply. While this is very effective in its own way, it doesn’t do the entire job of truly eliminating the highest amount of harmful bacteria possible.

Fact #2: UV water sterilization systems are incredibly compact, efficient, and affordable. One product, in particular, the UV Light SL-8, weighs under 15 pounds and can produce as much as 8 flow gallons per minute. The size of the unit is such that it can be easily mounted in an out-of-the-way area so that it operates completely unseen.

Fact #3: Most UV water treatment systems are designed to work alongside other water treatment hardware like filters, conditioners, and softeners. This means that a UV sterilization product isn’t going to meet an entire home’s need for clean water all by itself. It is recommended that filtration, conditioning, and purification are all used in concert to ensure that water is delivered at it’s highest quality possible.

Bonus Fact: No water filtration, sterilization, or other decontamination procedure will result in 100% pure water. Sadly, this is impossible due to the sheer number of microscopic organisms that live among us day-in and day-out. The best we can do is strive to come as close to 100% as possible, knowing that we’ll never truly destroy every living pathogen that makes its way into the water system.

In addition to these few facts, there is still much to know about water treatment for your home or business. Thankfully, The LeverEdge is here to help educate and guide you along the way.
